Aparigraha is one of the yamas (restraints) under Patanjali’s yoga Sutras that fits perfectly with this topic. Aparigraha, non-possessiveness, non-hoarding or not desiring more than we need is a lesson we could all practice more of. The more stuff we have, the more we worry about losing, and then the more we are distracted from our true needs. At these times of transformation it is wise to practice some self-inquiry. Find out what exactly it is in life that will respect your dharma. Hopefully you will realize that what you are seeking is more love, better health, or peace etc. and not a bigger house, a new car or items for your wardrobe. Honor those things that you cherish and allow your life to be a labor of love. So what can we do to try to figure this out? Write in a journal, meditate, take a walk in nature, have a seat next to a stream or waterfall, practice yoga or other mind-body exercises that allow you to tap into your soul. It is also important to remember that this life is a journey and most likely it will not even be in this life that we figure it out. By staying true to your goals you will get the answers needed, they will present themselves when necessary. So do your best by practicing living in the moment, stay on your path, have faith and the work will begin. |
As we move through this life, often we ponder a change of pace. At times we get caught up in things that are not really important to us because we are surrounded by it. There might be thoughts questioning lifestyle, relationships, possessions, occupation or any others. We may realize that we desire something different, something away from the norm or against the current. This crave for individuality is healthy and extremely important to pursue for those of seeking our personal dharma, or life’s purpose.
